Hardy Fish Cycling

Supplies needed:

  1. Test kits for Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte. You could purchase an All In One with the three tests or separate test kits.
  2. Two or three hardy fish

Hardy fish cycling is the old method of jumpstart a nitrogen cycle. It was used to be the only method of cycling an aquarium due to the lack of knowledge of what was going on in an aquarium tank way back in the time of my grandfather, It is still used now by some aquarists, but is cruel to fish, specially the poor abused hardy fish. It consists of placing two or three hardy fish in your newly dechlorinated tank, or in a tank that has no nitrogen cycle. Then, from four to eight weeks you can observe how your hardy fish suffer everyday while you perform the testing in your aquarium Ammonia, NitrItes and NitrAtes until your aquarium is cycled.

Cycled aquarium readings are:

  • AMMONIA : 0 ppm.
  • NITRITE : 0 ppm.
  • NITRATE : Going UP.
