Refractometers and Hydrometers
Refractometer
A Refractometer gives you a reading of the Gravity and Salinity of the aquarium water, this is important only for a saltwater aquarium.
A good specific gravity to maintain for your saltwater aquarium will depend on whether you have fish-only saltwater tank or reef tank.

Hydrometer
The Hydrometer let you test the salinity of your tank also, but unlike a Refractometer with the use it looses accuracy over time. In order to use your hydrometer you need to calibrate it to 75 to 77 degrees. You will want to calibrate your Hydrometer monthly in order to get more accurate readings.
